Our Story

We are the Alberta Ferret Society (AFS); pioneers within this province. We are solely responsible for bringing the plight of the pet ferret into the forefront in Alberta and for spreading our experiences and knowledge throughout this province and beyond.

The Alberta Ferret Society is an internationally recognized organization that exists because it cares about ferrets!

It was created by a small group of ferret owners who had the foresight to recognize that education for ferret owners was becoming vital as the market for ferrets began to rapidly expand. They realized, through their continuous sharing of facts and observations, that they possessed among them a vast reservoir of knowledge not currently available to ferret owners in this province. Their dream was to organize a credible, stable and professionally run Society and thereby create a vehicle by which they could ultimately improve the lives of ferrets and their owners through out the province.

The Alberta Ferret Society was officially founded in July 1997 and became the first and only charitable ferret rescue in Alberta. What began with a handful of ferret lovers blossomed into a multi-member organization of professionals dedicated to the health and welfare of ferrets.

The AFS took the time, right at the beginning, to establish a strong foundation that would be capable of sustaining it into the future and since then it has grown into Alberta’s foremost authority on ferret care and rescue. Today the strength of the Alberta Ferret Society comes from the remarkable diversity of its many volunteers and their determination to achieve its objectives.

The AFS does not maintain offices or a free standing shelter. Ferrets that arrive are housed in member approved homes until permanent adoptive homes can be found. The AFS also does not spend precious resources putting on social events for its members. Education and rescue are our top priorities.

What the AFS does is save ferrets………..one ferret at a time!

Because the Alberta Ferret Society cares so deeply about ferrets it refuses to limit itself. Its members work diligently to bring its services to every corner of this province, and, perhaps, one day even beyond!

To date the Alberta Ferret Society has been so successful in its mission that its words and works have served as a standard for other organizations and have been published internationally to aid ferrets around the world. Are we proud? You bet! With a vision in our hearts, the spirit of democracy as our hallmark and teamwork at the centre of our efforts – TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
