Pre-screen Interview
The first step in our adoption process is to complete a pre-screen interview. This step is usually conducted by telephone and takes approximately 15 minutes.
During the pre-screen process you will be asked a number of questions which will help the AFS to get to know you and to determine what your level of knowledge regarding ferrets is. It also allows the AFS to assess your current lifestyle (i.e. children, existing pets, etc.).
If, after completion of the interview we determine that you are suitable as a potential adopter you will move on to step two.
In-home Assessment
The second step is the in-home visit. One of our team of adoption coordinators will meet with you and your family in your home. This visit can be helpful for both the first time ferret owner and 'old hands' alike. The AFS pioneered the policy of in-home visits for potential adopters and we are adept at helping you to prepare your home for a new ferret!
During the in-home visit we are more than happy to answer any ferret-care questions you have and we will also assist you in identifying areas of your home which may require ferret-proofing.
Eligibilty for adoption is determined with the best interests of the ferret in mind. Following the in-home you will be contacted and advised whether or not you have been approved to adopt. If approved you will move on to the next step.
Viewing available ferrets
One of our adoption coordinators will discuss which ferret(s) are currently available and are most suitable for you. You will be given the contact information for the foster home(s) along with a time frame in which to view the ferret(s). Once you have selected your new family member(s) you have one final step to complete.
Finalizing the adoption
An adoption coordinator will make the arrangments to finalize the adoption and you will take your new ferret(s) home!
