Ferret Housing and Food
What food do you buy?
What kind of food do you buy? Do you buy the kind that has the fruts and such in it, or do you buy the straight kibble and add other things to it?

I use a mixture of good quality ferret and kitten foods. Remember that ferrets are olfactory imprinters when it comes to food. They reconginize what is edible by smell at a very young age (excluding sugary foods) and so it can be very hard to introduce new foods to their diet as they mature. The more foods your offer the broader their range of imprinting will be. I just returned from a ferret conference in Toronto where we were introduced to a new kibble, just on the market, called Innova EVO Ferret diet. The ingrediants listing look great. In the past we have always been told to make sure that foods are high in protien (30% or more), high in fat (20% or more) and that the first three ingrediants should be meat. This is still true but now we are told that ferrets cannot digest carbohydrates at all and so this ingrediant needs to be as low as you can get it (1-2% or lower). So far I have not seen the EVO diet for ferrets in our stores. I have used the cat EVO diet which is also good but the manufactures, who were at the conference said that if you ask for it at your pet stores they will order it for you so go to your local pet store and ask them to bring it in! The more good quality ferret foods we can get the healthier our ferrets will be!

I would not recommend the foo
I would not recommend the food with bits of fruit and vegetables in it. I purchased a bag of this one time and ended up with $2000 in blockage surgery for two ferrets. After writing the company to complain, they reimbursed me for the expense, but still not a fun experience. I would recommend that you just buy totally ferret, you will never go wrong with this brand. Your ferret will do fine with just this kibble and the odd supplement with ferretone or duck soup (ground up chicken and other stuff, you can look it up on line).
